Arriving in the Netherlands
Travel from Amsterdam Airport (Schiphol) to the Hague Central Station (Den Haag Centraal)
1.   There is fast, frequent and cheap rail service from Amsterdam airport to The Hague Central Station. On coming out of the Arrivals Hall, you will walk straight into “Schiphol Plaza” which is also the train station.
2.   Ticket booths will be located to your right (next to the Police Station and Starbucks Coffee).
3.   Obtain a second-class ticket to “Den Haag Centraal” (the Hague Central Station). You can buy a ticket from one of the ticket desks. If you have a credit card or European debit card (Maestro) you can use the yellow ticket machines that are scattered throughout the station hall.
4.   Be careful not to select any of the discount options: they are only valid in combination with other cards, which you most likely do not possess.
5.   Local travel expenses are covered by the conference budget, so make sure to save the ticket.
6.   A one-way 2nd class ticket will cost approximately 8 euros. The trip takes approximately 30 minutes, and fast trains leave at 28 and 58 after the hour.

UNFORTUNATELY, DUE TO CONSTRUCTION ACTIVITIES, THERE IS NO SHUTTLE SERVICE FROM THE HAGUE CENTRAL STATION TO THE HOTEL !

From the Hague Central Station (Den Haag Centraal) to the ISYP conference Hotel (Carlton Beach Hotel)
1.   The Carlton Beach hotel is conveniently located near public transportation.
2.   The tramstop is located outside the station (take the exit to the left).
3.   From The Hague Central Station take tram #9 and stay on until the last stop "Zwarte Pad".
4.   A strip card (bus ticket) can be bought at the public transport desk at the station. The trip is 3 strips on the strip card (a 15-strip card costs approximately 7 euros).
5.   Leave the tram at the end-point (Zwarte Pad). Carlton Beach Hotel is about 100m walk toward the sea-side.

Arriving in the Netherlands at night time
1.   During night time there is no direct train service to The Hague Central Station, only a night train service is maintained.
2.   If you are arriving from 1am to 5am, choose The Hague Hollands Spoor (The Hague HS) as your final destination.
3.   Upon arrival, look for a taxi and ask the driver to take you to Carlton Beach Hotel. Make sure you save the receipt, as local travel expenses are covered by the conference budget. If there are no taxies available, please contact the local organizers and we will figure out the best way for you to get to the hotel together.

Resources
Look on the English website of NS (Dutch Rail Service) for information on traveling by train in the Netherlands. Absolutely essential is the Journey Planner (accessible from the main page). To plan your trip to the Hague enter “Schiphol” as departure station and “Den Haag Centraal” as destination. Enter the proper date and time. Remember to allow for 30 minutes or so to retrieve your luggage and pass through customs. If you have trouble deciphering the Journey Planner let us know so we can help you finding the right train.

Another highlight of the NS website is the ticket machine simulator. If you plan to use the machine to buy your ticket this gives you an opportunity to practice! Just like the real ticket machine it starts off in Dutch, but you can set it to English by clicking the British flag in the bottom-left corner.

Funds & Visa
ISYP will cover the local costs of meals and accommodation for the duration of both the Student/Young and the senior Pugwash conference (17-20 April 2009).
Participants carry the responsibility to raise their own travel funds. There is only a limited possibility for some developing country participants under exceptional circumstances to obtain partial travel assistance from the organization. For those candidates who identify potential sources of funding for their travel expenses, ISYP can assist applicants by providing any additional information needed, including contacting funding sources, etc.

Also, please make sure that you start visa arrangements in time, so that if you are selected you will have enough time to obtain your visa (ISYP will provide an invitation letter for your visa application if necessary).
