Invitation: Seminar on Denuclearization and Non-proliferation (Amsterdam, 15 Nov. 2018)

The Prospects for Nuclear Diplomacy: Challenges in North Korea and Iran

After years of contention over North Korea’s nuclear program, the leaders of the United States and North Korea signed a Joint Statement on June 12, 2018, committing them to working towards the ‘denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula’. But what does this mean exactly? Is it a realistic goal or will we return to threats of ‘fire and fury’?

Around the same time, the United States unilaterally withdrew from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA)—also known as the Iran nuclear deal—even though the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has repeatedly certified that Iran has been implementing its commitments under the agreement. What are the prospects for the agreement and for a peaceful settlement of tensions over Iran’s nuclear activities?

This seminar will explore the cases of North-Korea and Iran and, more broadly, the current state of global efforts to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons.

This seminar will take place in The Hague on 15 November 2018 and is organized by the Netherlands section of the Nobel Peace prize-winning Pugwash Conferences on Science and World Affairs. The seminar will be in English.
